Overview of Da Nang

Da Nang is the city Vietnam built. While Hanoi grew over a thousand years and Ho Chi Minh City sprawled in chaos, Da Nang was deliberately planned — wide boulevards, a clean coastline, modern bridges, and the country's most consistent quality of life. It's Vietnam's third-largest city by population, but visitors often call it the most pleasant. There's no Old Quarter chaos, no Saigon scooter wars. Just 30 kilometers of beach on one side, mountains on the other, and a river running through the middle with bridges that put on light shows at night.

For Indian travelers, Da Nang is the unsung hero of a Vietnam trip. Most itineraries treat it as a one-night transit between Hanoi and Hoi An, which is a mistake. Spend three nights here. The beaches rival anything in Phuket or Bali for a fraction of the cost. The food is central Vietnamese — the spiciest, most fragrant, most underrated regional cuisine in the country. And just outside the city are some of Vietnam's biggest tourist draws: Ba Na Hills with its impossibly photogenic Golden Bridge, the Marble Mountains, and an hour south, the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An.

Da Nang is also Vietnam's most family-friendly city — wide pavements, beach safety, English-speaking restaurants, and theme parks. It's the easiest city in Vietnam for first-time travelers, families with kids, and anyone wanting beach time without giving up culture. We recommend it as the central node of any Vietnam trip from India.

Golden Bridge held by giant stone hands at Ba Na Hills Da Nang

₹2,800–₹3,200 (900,000–1,050,000 VND) full day pass 7 AM – 10 PM ⏱ Full day (5–7 hrs)

The Golden Bridge is a 150-metre pedestrian bridge held aloft by two giant stone hands emerging from the mountainside — one of the most photographed images in Vietnam and arguably the country's most extraordinary piece of modern landscape design. Set at 1,400 metres altitude on Ba Na Hills, it is surrounded by often-misty cloud forest, French colonial architecture, a wine cellar, and Fantasy Park. The full Ba Na Hills experience — reached by the world's longest non-stop single-track cable car — is a full day.

Go first cable car (7 AM) or after 3 PM to avoid peak crowds at the bridge. Bring a jacket — it is 8–10°C cooler at the top than the city. Beyond the bridge: French Village, Fantasy Park, Debay Wine Cellar, gardens.

2. My Khe Beach

Free Best 6–9 AM or 4–6:30 PM ⏱ As long as you want

My Khe was named one of the most beautiful beaches in Asia by Forbes and regularly appears on world beach lists. Calm, clear water during the dry season (February–August) makes it excellent for swimming and water sports. Sunrise faces east over the South China Sea — one of Vietnam's finest.

Northern stretch near Pham Van Dong is calm and family-friendly. Southern stretch near Non Nuoc has bigger surf and fewer crowds. Sunrise faces east — one of Vietnam's best. Rent a bicycle (₹150/day) and cruise the full strip.
Marble Mountains limestone hills with cave temples Da Nang

Five marble and limestone hills named after the five elements — water, wood, fire, earth, and metal — rising dramatically from the flat coastal plain. The largest, Thuy Son (Water Mountain), is threaded with Buddhist sanctuaries, Confucian temples, and natural caves lit by shafts of sunlight. The Huyen Khong Cave served as a Viet Cong field hospital during the war — its rock ceiling still bears bomb-blast holes. At the base, a village of marble carvers has worked the stone for centuries.

Take the elevator up and walk down. Visit Huyen Khong Cave — the natural light shafts are spectacular and the cave was used as a Viet Cong field hospital. Marble carving village at the base has everything from small souvenirs to massive Buddha statues.

4. Dragon Bridge (Cau Rong)

Free Best Saturday/Sunday 9 PM for fire show ⏱ 30–45 minutes

A 666-metre road bridge spanning the Han River, styled as a full-scale dragon — 568 metres of steel and concrete serpent whose body arches over six lanes of traffic. At night the dragon is illuminated in colour-shifting LED light, and every Saturday and Sunday at 9 PM it breathes actual fire and water from its mouth in a 15-minute show that draws thousands of spectators to the riverside promenade. One of the most spectacular pieces of urban engineering in Southeast Asia.

Watch from the eastern riverside promenade. Arrive 20 minutes early on weekends. Do not stand directly under the dragon's mouth — the water spray reaches a considerable distance.

5. Son Tra Peninsula (Monkey Mountain)

Free entry Best half-day ⏱ Half day

A forested mountain peninsula jutting into the South China Sea northeast of Da Nang city, rising to 696 metres and offering panoramic views over the bay, city, and coastline. The US military used it as a radar and communications base during the war — facilities are still visible. The peninsula is a nature reserve home to the rare red-shanked douc langur, one of the world's most striking primates, sometimes visible in the trees above the winding summit road.

Rent a scooter or take a private car up the winding road. Hairpin turns on the upper section — not recommended for inexperienced riders. Red-shanked douc langurs are sometimes spotted in the trees in the early morning.

Vietnamese fishermen traditionally prayed to her for safe return from the ocean. The pagoda complex itself is beautifully maintained, with 18 Arhat statues, ornate gates, and wide sea views from the terrace. Sunset from here is among Da Nang's finest.

Combine with the Son Tra Peninsula drive. Dress modestly — active place of worship. The sunset view from the terrace behind the statue is one of the best in Da Nang.

Built by the French in 1923 and painted a striking shade of dusty rose, Da Nang Cathedral is one of the city's most photogenic landmarks. Locals call it Con Ga (Rooster Church) for the rooster weather vane that tops the bell tower — a reference to a Gallic cockerel added by its French builders. The Gothic-style interior is cool and atmospheric, with stained glass and a long central nave. Mass is held daily and the cathedral remains an active parish serving Da Nang's Catholic community.

Called Con Ga Church (Rooster Church) locally for the rooster weather vane. Avoid visiting during mass times. Photography permitted in the courtyard and exterior freely.

9. Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture

₹200 (60,000 VND) 7:30 AM – 5 PM ⏱ 1–1.5 hours

Over 300 pieces of sandstone sculpture, including lingas, deities, and temple decorations spanning every major period of Cham art. The museum was originally built by the French in 1915 specifically to house these artefacts. Understanding Cham art here makes a subsequent visit to My Son Sanctuary significantly richer.

Famous Food in Da Nang

Central Vietnamese food is fiery, herby, and intensely flavored — quite different from northern or southern Vietnamese cooking. Da Nang is also a seafood city — what's caught in the morning is on plates by lunch.

Mì Quảng ₹100–₹180

Da Nang's signature dish. Wide rice noodles bathed in a turmeric-rich broth with shrimp, pork, peanuts, fresh herbs, and a crispy rice cracker on top. Served semi-dry — the broth is a condiment rather than a soup. More flavour per spoon than almost anything else in Vietnam.

Best at: Mì Quảng Bà Mua — the city's most celebrated bowl

Bún Chả Cá ₹100–₹150

A Da Nang specialty rarely found elsewhere: rice vermicelli in a clear, sweet-savoury broth with grilled fish cakes, fresh herbs, and chilli. The fish cakes are pounded by hand and grilled over charcoal — a texture unlike any packaged equivalent.

Best at: Bún Chả Cá 109 Nguyen Chi Thanh — the original and best

Bánh Xèo ₹150–₹250

Vietnamese turmeric-yellow crepes sizzled on a blazing pan until crisp on the outside, filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts. Eaten by wrapping pieces in rice paper with fresh herbs and dunking in a tangy fish-sauce dip. Messy, fun, and deeply satisfying.

Best at: Bánh Xèo Bà Dưỡng — legendary in the city for generations

Bún Bò Huế ₹150–₹250

A fiery beef noodle soup from nearby Hue — lemongrass and chilli broth with beef shank, pork knuckle, and thick round noodles. Bolder and spicier than pho; the chilli oil on top is serious heat. Central Vietnam's answer to northern pho.

Best at: Bún Bò Huế Bà Thu — reliable bowls at street-stall prices

Cơm Gà Da Nang ₹150–₹250

Da Nang-style chicken rice — poached chicken on fragrant rice cooked in chicken broth, served with a side of tangy chicken salad and a ginger dipping sauce. Simpler than Hoi An's famous version but arguably more nuanced. A city staple eaten morning through evening.

Best at: Cơm Gà Bà Buội — long-running favourite near Han Market

Seafood at My Khe ₹500–₹1,500 per person

The beachfront strip along My Khe is lined with seafood restaurants where tanks of live fish, shrimp, and crab sit out front. Point to what you want, agree a price by weight, and it comes back grilled, steamed, or fried 20 minutes later. Morning-caught seafood at lunchtime prices that would shock anyone used to Mumbai or Delhi seafood costs.

Best at: Bé Mặn or Mỹ Hạnh restaurants on the My Khe beachfront

Bánh Tráng Cuốn Thịt Heo ₹150–₹250

Da Nang's most sociable dish — thin slices of pork belly, boiled and served at the table with rice paper, fresh herbs, garlic, and chilli. Each person wraps their own rolls. The ritual of assembling the roll is half the point. A dish that slows meals down and makes conversation happen.

Best at: Trần Restaurant chain — reliable quality across multiple locations

Nem Lụi ₹120–₹200

Pork and lemongrass forcemeat moulded onto sugarcane or bamboo skewers and grilled over charcoal until caramelised. Eaten wrapped in rice paper with pineapple, star fruit, and fresh herbs, then dipped in a peanut-hoisin sauce. An iconic central Vietnamese street snack.

Best at: Street stalls near Cho Con market and the river promenade

Chè (Vietnamese Sweet Soups) ₹40–₹80

Vietnamese dessert drinks and sweet soups — dozens of varieties, served warm or iced, made from beans, coconut milk, jelly, lotus seeds, jackfruit, or taro. A chè stall is one of the most colourful sights in any Vietnamese market. The iced versions are perfect in Da Nang's afternoon heat.

Best at: Any market stall or dedicated chè shop in the city centre

Cà Phê Sữa Đá (Vietnamese Iced Coffee) ₹40–₹150

Strong Vietnamese robusta drip-brewed through a phin filter, sweetened with condensed milk, and poured over ice. One of the great beverages of Southeast Asia. Da Nang has a serious café culture — for specialty single-origin coffee go to 43 Factory Coffee; for the classic street version, any plastic-stool café will do for ₹40.

Best at: 43 Factory Coffee Roasters for specialty; street stalls everywhere for classic

🌿 Vegetarian & Vegan Travelers

Da Nang is more vegetarian-friendly than most Vietnamese cities thanks to its strong Buddhist community. Buddhist vegetarian (chay) restaurants are common throughout the city.

  • Loving Hut — international vegan chain, multiple Da Nang branches
  • Nhà Hàng Chay An Lạc — Buddhist vegetarian restaurant, excellent central Vietnamese chay dishes
  • Cocoboco — vegan café in the beach area, fresh and healthy options
  • Saffron Indian Cuisine — reliable Indian vegetarian food
  • Tandoori Master — Indian restaurant, good for when you need a familiar fix
All prices are approximate (2026). Confirm with us before booking.

Markets & Shopping

Da Nang has a healthy mix of traditional covered markets, a lively marble-carving village, and modern malls — all within easy reach of the beach.

Han Market (Cho Han)

Hours: 6 AM – 8 PM · Best for: Custom tailoring, fabric, local food, souvenirs
Con Market (Cho Con)

Hours: Daily 6 PM – 11 PM · Best for: Evening seafood, beach-area dining, casual drinks
Vincom Plaza Da Nang

The main upscale shopping mall — international brands, a large supermarket, Vietnamese fashion labels, electronics, and a food court. Air-conditioned refuge on the hottest afternoons.

Hours: 9:30 AM – 10 PM · Best for: International brands, supermarket, air-conditioned comfort
Marble Carving Village (Non Nuoc)

At the base of the Marble Mountains, dozens of workshops carve everything from tiny fridge magnets to massive Buddha statues from locally quarried marble. Direct from carver to buyer — the best place in Vietnam for marble souvenirs.

Hours: 7 AM – 6 PM · Best for: Marble carvings, Buddha statues, unique sculptural souvenirs

💡 Bargaining Tips

Markets start at 50% over fair price — settle at 60–70% of asking. Tailoring is less negotiable. Marble shops expect heavy bargaining; quality varies so examine pieces carefully. Always be polite, smile, and walk away calmly — vendors will often call you back.

What to Buy

Marble carvings, conical non la hats, embroidered art, custom tailoring (cheaper than Hoi An), Vietnamese coffee, dried seafood, ao dai fabric, lacquerware, marble Buddha statues, stone coasters.

Bicycle rental ₹150/day Perfect for the beachfront strip — flat, wide, and scenic Many hotels rent bicycles. The 30 km beach boulevard is ideal for a morning or evening cycle.
Private car with driver ₹2,500–₹4,000/day Day trips — Ba Na Hills, Hue, Hoi An, Hai Van Pass Recommended for all day trips outside the city. We arrange private cars for all guests — door-to-door with an English-speaking driver.
Hop-on-hop-off bus ₹400 approx. Limited routes — mostly tourist-focused Covers main tourist sights. Limited frequency and route coverage. Grab is usually faster and more convenient.

Tips for Indian Travelers

Three Nights Minimum

Most Indian itineraries give Da Nang one night and rush to Hoi An. Don't. Da Nang has more to do: Ba Na Hills is a full day, Marble Mountains is half a day, Hoi An is a day trip, and the beach deserves at least one lazy morning. Three nights is the minimum to do it justice.

Stay Beachfront

Even if you don't plan to swim, the beachfront pace is the city's best feature — morning beach walks, evening seafood restaurants on the sand, and the sound of the South China Sea. Stay on Vo Nguyen Giap Street if you can.

Don't Skip Ba Na Hills

At ₹3,000+ it is expensive by Vietnamese standards — and yes, it is touristy. But the Golden Bridge experience and the full Ba Na Hills environment (cable car, French Village, mountain gardens) is genuinely unlike anything else in Vietnam. Plan a full day. Go early to avoid the worst crowds.

Beach Is Safer Than You Think

Lifeguards patrol the main beach zones throughout the day during dry season. The water is calm from February to August. My Khe is better for swimming than most Indian beaches — better than Goa for families in terms of safety and cleanliness.

Grab Is Your Friend

Download the Grab app before you land. It is the most reliable and fairly priced transport in Da Nang — better than flagging taxis, cheaper than hotel transfers. Accept only app-confirmed rides.

Vegetarian Food — Easier Here

Da Nang's strong Buddhist community means dedicated chay (vegetarian) restaurants are common. Loving Hut, Nhà Hàng Chay An Lạc, and Cocoboco are reliable. Indian restaurants provide backup for those needing fully familiar food.

Indian Restaurants Available

Saffron Indian Cuisine and Tandoori Master both serve reliable north Indian and south Indian food near the beach area. For when you need a proper thali or butter chicken, they are there.

Power Plug

Vietnam uses Type A, C, and F plugs. Indian Type D plugs (round 3-pin) do NOT fit Vietnamese sockets. Bring a universal travel adapter. Most hotels will provide one on request but do not count on it.

Beach Safety

Do not swim outside marked zones. A red flag means no swimming — currents can be dangerous, especially in September to November (typhoon season). Outside of typhoon season, the beach is generally safe for confident swimmers in marked zones.

Sunscreen Is Essential

Da Nang sun is intense — significantly stronger than Indian summer sun at the beach. Use SPF 50+ waterproof sunscreen. You can buy sunscreen locally (₹400–₹800 a tube) but bring your preferred brand from India as selection is limited.

Book Tours Independently

Do not book Ba Na Hills, Marble Mountains, or Hoi An day tours through your hotel — they markup significantly. Book directly online, through us, or through Klook. Hire a private driver for day trips rather than joining group tours wherever possible.

Cash for Markets, Card for Hotels

Most beachfront restaurants and hotels accept cards. Markets, street food stalls, and motorbike rental shops are cash only. Keep VND cash available at all times for small purchases.

Tipping

Not customary in Vietnam but appreciated. Tour guides and drivers: ₹100–₹200 per day is generous. Hotel staff: tip only for exceptional service. Skip tips at street food stalls.

Honeymoon Hotels

InterContinental Sun Peninsula and Naman Retreat are two of Vietnam's finest luxury resorts. Both offer private beach access, world-class spa facilities, and exceptional service. We arrange honeymoon perks — flowers, cake, and dinner setup — at no extra cost for our guests.

Da Nang FAQs

Common questions from Indian travelers planning a Da Nang trip.

Three nights minimum: Day 1 for city and beach, Day 2 for Ba Na Hills (full day), Day 3 for Hoi An day trip. Four nights for a relaxed pace with extra beach time and the Marble Mountains at a slower pace.
They are different and complement each other. Da Nang is a modern beach-and-mountain city with more variety, better hotels, more activities, and a broader range of experiences. Hoi An is a small, atmospheric UNESCO old town — beautiful and compact but you exhaust the main sights in a day. Most Indian travelers stay in Da Nang and visit Hoi An as a day trip or one-night extension. We recommend doing both.
Very safe. Da Nang is consistently ranked among the safest cities in Vietnam. Low crime, clean streets, lifeguarded beach, excellent English at tourist venues, and a welcoming attitude toward foreign visitors. Excellent for first-timers, families, and solo travelers.
February to May. Warm (27–33°C), dry, calm sea, low rainfall, no typhoon risk. Perfect beach conditions. Avoid September to November (peak typhoon season; flooding risk in nearby Hoi An). December to January is acceptable but cooler and occasionally overcast — not ideal for beach swimming.
Yes — but go with realistic expectations. The bridge itself is 150 metres and gets crowded. The full Ba Na Hills experience (cable car, French Village, Fantasy Park, Debay Wine Cellar, mountain gardens) justifies the ₹3,000 ticket when you plan a full day. Go on the first cable car at 7 AM for the best light and smallest crowds at the bridge.
₹50,000–₹85,000 per person covers flights, mid-range beachfront hotel, airport transfers, meals, Ba Na Hills ticket, Marble Mountains entry, and general sightseeing. Luxury resort guests (InterContinental, Naman Retreat) should budget ₹1,00,000+. We provide a custom quote based on your specific dates and preferences.
Absolutely. Da Nang is one of Asia's most underrated beach destinations — 30 km of clean sand, calm sea during the dry season, and world-class beachfront resorts at half the price of Phuket or Bali. Many Indian families use it as a pure beach trip with one Ba Na Hills day thrown in.
Yes — more so than most Vietnamese cities. Da Nang's strong Buddhist community supports a network of dedicated chay (vegetarian) restaurants. Loving Hut, Nhà Hàng Chay An Lạc, and Cocoboco are reliable options. Indian restaurants provide backup for fully familiar food.
30 minutes by car. Grab taxi ₹450–₹700; metered taxi ₹600–₹900; private car ₹1,200–₹1,800. We arrange transfers as part of all packages. Many travelers stop at Marble Mountains en route — it is exactly on the way.
Yes. The most effective approach is to go afternoon and stay for the evening — the lanterns and Old Town atmosphere are best after 5 PM when day-trippers thin out. Return by 9–10 PM. One night in Hoi An, however, gives you the magical early morning when the Ancient Town is nearly empty.
As of 2026, no direct flights from major Indian cities. Connections via Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Hong Kong. Many Indian travelers fly into Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City and take a domestic flight to Da Nang — Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, and Bamboo Airways all fly the route for ₹1,500–₹3,500 one-way in about 1 hour 20 minutes.
Excellent. InterContinental Sun Peninsula and Naman Retreat are two of the finest luxury resorts in Southeast Asia — private beach, forest setting, exceptional service, and a fraction of the cost of comparable Maldives or Phuket properties. Combine with romantic Hoi An evenings, sunset Hai Van Pass drives, and we arrange honeymoon perks at no extra cost.
