NORTH VIETNAM · BAY CRUISE

Cruises Departing from Tuan Chau

May 2026 note: Ha Long Bay in May is hot and hazy with periodic afternoon rain. Cruises still operate — mornings are typically clearer. The bay is never closed to tourism due to weather alone; conditions are simply better October–April. If travelling in May, choose a cruise with a covered sundeck option.

NORTH VIETNAM · BAY CRUISE · ALTERNATIVE

Cat Ba Island & Lan Ha Bay Port

Lan Ha Bay — adjacent to Ha Long Bay but administered separately — offers the same dramatic limestone karst scenery with significantly fewer cruise boats. It's fast becoming the preferred choice for travellers seeking seclusion, better visibility, and more authentic sailing experiences.

Port Information

Departure point Cat Ba Town pier, Cat Ba Island, Hai Phong Province
Access from Hanoi ~4 hours — by private car to Hai Phong (2.5 hrs) then fast ferry to Cat Ba (45 min); or car to Tuan Chau ferry crossing
Bay size 7,000 hectares; 139 islands — part of the larger Ha Long–Cat Ba UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (listed 2023)
Cruise operators Orchid Classic, Indochine, Pelican, Viet Hai Village — smaller fleet than Tuan Chau, more exclusive
Activities Kayaking, cliff jumping, fishing village visits, trekking Cat Ba National Park, swimming at dark cave beaches

Lan Ha vs Ha Long: If you've cruised Ha Long Bay before, Lan Ha Bay is a compelling upgrade — fewer boats, wilder scenery, better kayaking spots, and a genuine sense of discovery. The Orchid Classic cruise specifically routes through Lan Ha Bay and is our most-recommended choice for repeat Vietnam visitors.

Best Season for Lan Ha Bay

Lan Ha Bay shares Ha Long Bay's seasonal pattern — best October to April, more changeable May to September:

Cruises Through Lan Ha Bay

🏔️ What Makes Lan Ha Unique

Lan Ha Bay's 139 islands include floating fishing villages, pristine beaches only reachable by boat, and the Dark and Bright Cave system. Cat Ba Island itself has a national park with golden-headed langurs — one of the world's rarest primates. Trekking in the park (2–4 hrs) pairs beautifully with an overnight cruise.

NORTH VIETNAM · RIVER & CAVE BOATS

Trang An & Tam Coc — Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh's Trang An Landscape Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Vietnam's most serene boat journey experiences. Traditional wooden row boats — rowed by foot by local boatwomen — navigate limestone cave tunnels, rice paddies, and ancient temples.

Both Trang An and Tam Coc fully operational — May 2026

Trang An vs Tam Coc

Trang An 3–4 caves, longer route (2.5–3 hrs). UNESCO core zone. More spectacular cave passages. Best for first-timers. Slightly more expensive (~200,000 VND pp).
Tam Coc 3 caves, shorter route (2 hrs). Older and more touristic — "three caves" through rice fields. Stunning landscape but more souvenir vendors on the water. (~150,000 VND pp).
Bich Dong Pagoda Add-on boat route from Tam Coc pier. Quiet pagoda temple complex built into a limestone cliff. 15-min boat ride + short hike through cave. Highly recommended.
Mua Cave Viewpoint hill above Tam Coc — 500 steps to a spectacular panorama of the rice-paddy landscape. A 45-min side trip from the Tam Coc boat pier. Best at sunrise or late afternoon.
Boat style Traditional metal row boats holding 2 passengers. Rowed by one boatwoman (often using her feet on the oars — a unique Ninh Binh tradition). Life jackets provided.

Getting to Ninh Binh

From Hanoi by private car: 2 hours (95 km south). Most tours from Hanoi include private transport as a day trip. Departure 7–7:30am, return by 5–6pm.
From Hanoi by train: Hanoi station to Ninh Binh — 2 hrs, ~₹200–400. Trains run several times daily. Station is close to Tam Coc and Trang An.
Best as an overnight: Stay one night in Ninh Binh to combine Trang An, Mua Cave, Bich Dong, and Cuc Phuong National Park at leisure rather than rushing.
Peak times: Trang An is busiest 9am–11am. Arrive by 8am or after 12pm for shorter queues. Weekends and Vietnamese public holidays are especially crowded.

Best Good Avoid

Ninh Binh is beautiful year-round. Rice paddies turn golden in September–October (harvest) — particularly photogenic. May–August is warm and lush.

Ninh Binh is included in multiple Book Vietnam Holiday packages as a day-trip from Hanoi or as an overnight stop en route from Hanoi to Da Nang. It combines effortlessly with Ha Long Bay (Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Ha Long itinerary), making it Vietnam's most rewarding heritage circuit.

SOUTH VIETNAM · RIVER CRUISE

Mekong Delta — Cai Be & Can Tho Ports

The Mekong River delta is the rice bowl of Vietnam — a vast, flat waterway landscape of floating markets, coconut groves, and river-life villages. Cruise experiences here focus on slow travel, authenticity, and local immersion rather than dramatic scenery.

Departure Hubs

Cai Be Tien Giang Province. 2 hrs from HCMC. Gateway to the upper Mekong. Floating market (best 6–9am), island villages, and cottage industries (coconut candy, rice paper). Day trip or 2D1N cruise start point.
My Tho Closest Mekong town to HCMC (1.5 hrs). Day trip hub for tourists. Four Mekong river islands accessible by local sampan boat. Less developed cruise infrastructure than Cai Be or Can Tho.
Can Tho The largest city in the Mekong Delta. Hub for deeper Mekong exploration. Cai Rang Floating Market (6–9am) — Vietnam's largest. 3 hrs from HCMC by road or 45 min by speedboat. Overnight cruise terminus.
Cruise route Most 2D1N cruises run Cai Be → Can Tho (or reverse). Full-day trips usually explore Cai Be islands and return to HCMC. The Mekong Eyes Classic cruise runs this full route.
Best time to visit November–April (dry season). Floating markets are most active December–February. Avoid September–October (peak flood season — waterways overflow but also spectacularly full).

What to Expect

Cai Rang Floating Market — Vendors sell fruit, vegetables, and goods from wooden boats moored together. Speciality items hung from long poles identify what each boat sells. Arrive by 6–7am before it winds down.
Sampan / small boat rides — Narrow waterway exploration in traditional wooden sampan boats through coconut groves and stilted village canals. Included on all Mekong cruises.
Home industry visits — Rice paper making, coconut candy production, bee-keeping honey farms, and tropical fruit orchards — all accessible from the river and included in most cruise itineraries.
Cycling through villages — Many Mekong cruise programs include a bicycle ride through river island villages — flat, scenic, and deeply local. Bikes are provided on board.

CENTRAL VIETNAM · RIVER & ESTUARY

Perfume River & Thu Bon River

Central Vietnam offers two contrasting river journey experiences — Hue's imperial Perfume River with ancient pagodas and royal tombs, and Hoi An's Thu Bon River with basket boat rides, water coconut forest villages, and day trips to the Cham Islands.

Hue — Perfume River (Sông Hương)

Pier location Toa Kham Pier (Đập Đá), 2 km south of Hue city centre. Dragon boats depart here.
Boat type Traditional wooden dragon boats with covered canopy seating (6–12 passengers). Rowed by motor; some historic poles preserved for aesthetics.
Route highlights Thiên Mụ Pagoda (Hue's iconic 7-tier tower) · Royal Imperial Tombs of Minh Mang, Tu Duc, Khai Dinh · Hon Chen Temple river stop
Duration Half-day (morning tour, ~4 hrs) or full-day (8 hrs, including 2–3 tombs by car after river section)
Cost ~100,000–150,000 VND pp for the boat ride (not including tomb entry tickets). Tomb entry: 150,000–200,000 VND per site.

Hoi An — Thu Bon River & Cham Islands

Pier location Bach Dang Street riverside pier in Hoi An Old Town. Basket boats depart from the Water Coconut Village at Cam Thanh.
Basket boats Circular woven bamboo "thuyền thúng" navigated by a boatman through the water coconut palm canals of Cam Thanh village. 45-min ride, ~150,000 VND pp. Photogenic and unique to this region.
Cham Islands day trip High-speed boat from Cua Dai Beach to the Cham Islands UNESCO Marine Park (~45 min). Day trips include snorkelling, beach time, and seafood lunch. Seasonal: March–September only (seas too rough in winter).
Evening river cruise Sunset cruises on the Thu Bon depart from the Old Town pier at 5:30pm. Lanterns are released on the water during festival nights. ~100,000 VND pp.

Hoi An Lantern Night: On the 14th day of each lunar month, Hoi An dims electric lights and fills with colourful lanterns along the river. Combining an evening river cruise with Lantern Night is one of Vietnam's most memorable experiences — ask us to align your Hoi An nights with the full moon date.

Hue
🐉 Best Season for Perfume River

February to August is ideal — clear skies, low risk of rain, and comfortable temperatures for tomb visits. October–December brings heavy rains and occasional flooding in Hue — boat tours may be cancelled. Hue is Vietnam's rainiest major city; check weather before booking.

Hoi An
🏝️ Cham Islands Season Window

Cham Islands boat trips operate March to September only — the sea is too rough in the winter months. May to August is peak season for snorkelling (clear water, calm sea). Book Cham Islands in advance during June–August; they fill up quickly. Our packages that include Hoi An can add Cham Islands on request.

Practical
🚤 Booking River Experiences

Perfume River dragon boats and Hoi An basket boat rides can be booked at the pier on the day in most cases. However, for peak season (October–February) and during festival periods, pre-booking through your hotel or our team avoids disappointment — particularly for Hue tomb boat tours which have limited morning departures.
