Departure ports, embarkation details, facilities, seasonal conditions, and transfer logistics for every major cruise and boat journey in Vietnam — all in one place.
Vietnam's cruise and boat journey network spans the entire length of the country — from dramatic limestone bay cruises in the north to slow Mekong river journeys in the south. Each port has its own character, season, and logistics.
North Vietnam
Tuan Chau Marina
Bay CruiseVietnam's busiest cruise port. Gateway to Ha Long Bay UNESCO World Heritage Site. Modern facilities, 200+ berths, all major Ha Long cruise operators depart here.
North Vietnam
Cat Ba / Lan Ha Bay
Bay CruiseQuieter and increasingly popular alternative to Tuan Chau. Lan Ha Bay is as beautiful as Ha Long but sees fewer crowds — ideal for premium and adventure cruises.
North Vietnam
Trang An / Tam Coc
River & CaveUNESCO-listed inland waterways near Ninh Binh. Traditional row boats navigate through river caves and karst landscapes. Peaceful and deeply cultural experience.
South Vietnam
Cai Be / Can Tho
River CruiseMekong Delta departure hubs for overnight river cruises and day trips. Cai Be is the western entry point; Can Tho is the larger city hub with Cai Rang floating market.
Central Vietnam
Hue — Perfume River
Imperial RiverDragon boat rides on the Perfume River connect Hue's royal pagodas and imperial tombs. A cultural journey rather than an overnight cruise — typically half-day or full-day.
Central Vietnam
Hoi An — Thu Bon River
Estuary & SeaBasket boat rides through water coconut forests, river sunset cruises, and day trips to the Cham Islands UNESCO Marine Park depart from Hoi An's riverside pier.
Booking note: For all Book Vietnam Holiday cruise packages, embarkation logistics — private transfer to the port, luggage handling, check-in support, and return transfer — are arranged by our team. You don't need to navigate any of these ports independently. Contact us to discuss cruise options before booking.
Tuan Chau International Marina is Vietnam's flagship cruise departure point — the gateway to Ha Long Bay's 1,969 limestone islands, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. All major overnight cruise operators depart from here.
Ha Long Bay is accessible year-round, but conditions vary significantly. The best visibility and calmest seas are October to April:
May 2026 note: Ha Long Bay in May is hot and hazy with periodic afternoon rain. Cruises still operate — mornings are typically clearer. The bay is never closed to tourism due to weather alone; conditions are simply better October–April. If travelling in May, choose a cruise with a covered sundeck option.
Lan Ha Bay — adjacent to Ha Long Bay but administered separately — offers the same dramatic limestone karst scenery with significantly fewer cruise boats. It's fast becoming the preferred choice for travellers seeking seclusion, better visibility, and more authentic sailing experiences.
Lan Ha vs Ha Long: If you've cruised Ha Long Bay before, Lan Ha Bay is a compelling upgrade — fewer boats, wilder scenery, better kayaking spots, and a genuine sense of discovery. The Orchid Classic cruise specifically routes through Lan Ha Bay and is our most-recommended choice for repeat Vietnam visitors.
Lan Ha Bay shares Ha Long Bay's seasonal pattern — best October to April, more changeable May to September:
Lan Ha Bay's 139 islands include floating fishing villages, pristine beaches only reachable by boat, and the Dark and Bright Cave system. Cat Ba Island itself has a national park with golden-headed langurs — one of the world's rarest primates. Trekking in the park (2–4 hrs) pairs beautifully with an overnight cruise.
Ninh Binh's Trang An Landscape Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Vietnam's most serene boat journey experiences. Traditional wooden row boats — rowed by foot by local boatwomen — navigate limestone cave tunnels, rice paddies, and ancient temples.
Ninh Binh is beautiful year-round. Rice paddies turn golden in September–October (harvest) — particularly photogenic. May–August is warm and lush.
Ninh Binh is included in multiple Book Vietnam Holiday packages as a day-trip from Hanoi or as an overnight stop en route from Hanoi to Da Nang. It combines effortlessly with Ha Long Bay (Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Ha Long itinerary), making it Vietnam's most rewarding heritage circuit.
The Mekong River delta is the rice bowl of Vietnam — a vast, flat waterway landscape of floating markets, coconut groves, and river-life villages. Cruise experiences here focus on slow travel, authenticity, and local immersion rather than dramatic scenery.
Central Vietnam offers two contrasting river journey experiences — Hue's imperial Perfume River with ancient pagodas and royal tombs, and Hoi An's Thu Bon River with basket boat rides, water coconut forest villages, and day trips to the Cham Islands.
Hoi An Lantern Night: On the 14th day of each lunar month, Hoi An dims electric lights and fills with colourful lanterns along the river. Combining an evening river cruise with Lantern Night is one of Vietnam's most memorable experiences — ask us to align your Hoi An nights with the full moon date.
February to August is ideal — clear skies, low risk of rain, and comfortable temperatures for tomb visits. October–December brings heavy rains and occasional flooding in Hue — boat tours may be cancelled. Hue is Vietnam's rainiest major city; check weather before booking.
Cham Islands boat trips operate March to September only — the sea is too rough in the winter months. May to August is peak season for snorkelling (clear water, calm sea). Book Cham Islands in advance during June–August; they fill up quickly. Our packages that include Hoi An can add Cham Islands on request.
Perfume River dragon boats and Hoi An basket boat rides can be booked at the pier on the day in most cases. However, for peak season (October–February) and during festival periods, pre-booking through your hotel or our team avoids disappointment — particularly for Hue tomb boat tours which have limited morning departures.
