TRAVEL STYLES

What's included in each travel style

Each style uses a different baseline for accommodation, food, and transport. Here's what each one assumes.

Budget

~$35–45/day excl. flights

Hostels, guesthouses, and budget hotels under $20/night. Street food and local restaurants ($1–$5/meal). Sleeper buses, public trains, and shared transport between cities. Free or low-cost activities like temple visits, walking tours, and beaches. Best for backpackers who prioritise experiences over comfort.

Mid-range

~$90–120/day excl. flights

3-star hotels and well-rated boutique stays ($30–$70/night). A mix of local restaurants and sit-down meals ($8–$20). Domestic flights for longer routes, comfortable buses, and private taxis for shorter hops. Paid tours and entry fees for major attractions. Best for most travelers who want comfort without overspending.

Luxury

~$250+/day excl. flights

4-star and 5-star hotels and resorts ($120+/night). Fine dining, hotel breakfasts, and curated food experiences. Private drivers, business-class trains, and domestic flights between every major stop. Private guided tours, premium Ha Long Bay cruises, and spa experiences. Best for travelers who want everything taken care of.

COST CONTEXT

About Vietnam travel costs

Vietnam remains one of the most affordable destinations in Southeast Asia, with average daily costs significantly lower than Thailand or Bali. Budget travelers can comfortably get by on $35–$45 a day, mid-range travelers on $90–$120, and luxury travelers will spend $250 and up depending on their choices. Big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City sit at the higher end of each range, while smaller towns like Hoi An, Hue, and Da Lat are noticeably cheaper.

Flights are usually the single biggest cost for international travelers — often more than everything else combined. Booking 2–3 months ahead and traveling in shoulder seasons (March–April or September–October) typically saves 20–40% on airfare. In-country transport is cheap: long-distance sleeper buses cost $10–$25, trains $25–$60, and domestic flights $40–$90 if booked in advance on Vietjet or Bamboo Airways.

Other costs to factor in: the Vietnam e-visa ($25 for single-entry — Indian citizens can apply entirely online), travel insurance, and shopping. Vietnam is a famously good place for tailored clothing, coffee, ceramics, and silk — many travelers come home with more luggage than they arrived with. FREQUENTLY ASKED

Vietnam travel cost questions

Common questions about budgeting for a Vietnam holiday.

The estimate uses average 2025 prices across each travel style and is accurate within roughly 15–20% for most trips. Actual costs depend heavily on when you book, what time of year you travel, and personal spending habits. Treat it as a solid starting point for budgeting, not a fixed quote.
Shoulder seasons — March to April and September to October — usually offer the best balance of weather and price. Peak season runs November to February in the north and June to August in the south, when flights and hotels are most expensive. Avoid Tet (Lunar New Year, late January or early February) unless you specifically want to experience it — many businesses close and domestic travel gets very crowded.
Not at all. Vietnam is one of the most affordable destinations in Asia. A budget traveler can have an excellent trip on $40 a day excluding flights. Even luxury travelers will find Vietnam offers far better value than equivalent stays in Europe, North America, or Australia.
Yes if you haven't booked yet — flights are typically the biggest single cost. Uncheck the flights option if you're using reward points, have already booked, or want to see only your in-country spending.
Street food and local restaurants cost $1–$3 per meal. Mid-range sit-down restaurants run $5–$12. Hotel restaurants and Western food cost $15–$30. Budget travelers spend around $10 a day on food; mid-range travelers around $25–$30. The food in Vietnam is exceptional at every price point.
We strongly recommend it. Healthcare in Vietnam is affordable by Western standards but not free for tourists, and serious incidents can lead to expensive medical evacuations. Budget travel insurance starts around $5 a day; comprehensive plans can run $15+ a day.
Yes, if you keep the "Visa fees" option checked. The current Vietnam e-visa costs $25 for single-entry. Citizens of some countries are exempt from visa requirements for short stays — uncheck the option if that applies to you. Use our Vietnam Visa Status Checker if you've already applied and want to track your application.
Keep enough cash for two or three days' worth of small purchases and use ATMs in cities to top up. Larger cities and tourist areas accept cards widely, but markets, local restaurants, taxis, and rural areas are cash-only. Most ATMs charge a small withdrawal fee.
